He is practical, watchful, and reluctant to interfere until the evidence becomes too close to ignore. What happens only a few houses down the road eventually forces him to choose between family loyalty and protecting the legacy his father trusted them to preserve.

The Middle Child

Nathan Mercer

Nathan lives in Cincinnati, roughly six hours from Rogersville. He was once expected to handle the estate, but distance changed the family's plans before Samuel died.

He trusts Emily completely and assumes the estate is being handled the way their father intended. For a long time, distance makes it easy to accept reassuring answers. Eventually, the same distance becomes the reason he realizes how much he has not been seeing.

The youngest Mercer is handed the role neither brother wanted: executor and keeper of the estate. At first, she approaches the responsibility with care and intends to honor exactly what Samuel left behind.

He is comfortable spending, comfortable promising, and far less interested in finishing work than he is in being paid for it. As the estate begins funding more of their private life, Tyler becomes one of the forces that makes it harder for Emily to step back from what she has started.
