Family Patriarch
Samuel Mercer
Samuel spent forty years building and restoring a small collection of rental homes in Rogersville. A carpenter, landlord, and hands-on problem solver, he treated tenants like people rather than account numbers and taught Daniel to do the same.
His death begins the novel, but Samuel remains present in nearly every decision that follows. The properties are his life's work, and the will is his final attempt to leave his children something stable enough to outlast him.
